Values of the hygroscopicity parameter are between 0.5 and 2 for highly-CCN-active salts such as sodium chloride, between 0.01 and 0.5 for slightly to very hygroscopic organic 5 species, and 0 for nonhygroscopic components. If compositional data are available and if the hygroscopicity parameter of each component is known, a multicomponent hygroscopicity parameter can be computed by weighting component hygroscopicity parameters by their volume fractions in the mixture. In the absence of information on chemical composition, experimental data for complex, multicomponent particles can 10 be fitted to obtain the hygroscopicity parameter. The hygroscopicity parameter can thus also be used to conveniently model the CCN activity of atmospheric particles, including those containing insoluble components. We confirm the general applicability of the hygroscopicity parameter and its mixing rule by applying it to published hygro-scopic diameter growth factor and CCN-activation data for single-and multi-component 15 particles.

Investigative modeling of new pathways for secondary organic aerosol formation

Recent advances in secondary organic aerosol (SOA) research are reviewed and the status of current understanding is investigated using a box model of SOA formation. Benzene and isoprene are newly identified precursors that are included in this SOA model; these precursors form SOA via secondary products. The model is also extended to include some representation of aqueous partitioning and the fo...

CCN Prediction error from application of Köhler Theory: Importance for the Aerosol Indirect Effect

In-situ observations of aerosol and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) and the GISS GCM Model II’ with an online aerosol simulation and explicit aerosol-cloud interactions are used to quantify the uncertainty in radiative forcing and autoconversion rate from application of Köhler theory. Simulations suggest that application of Köhler theory introduces a 10-20% uncertainty in global average indirec...

Reconciliation of measurements of hygroscopic growth and critical supersaturation of aerosol particles in central Germany

Aerosol physical, chemical and hygroscopic properties were measured in a range of airmasses during COPS (Convective and Orographically-induced Precipitation Study) ground-based in June and July of 2007 at the Hornisgrinde mountain site in the Black Forest, Southwest Germany. Non-refractory aerosol composition was measured with an Aerosol Mass Spectrometer, simultaneous to hygroscopic growth fac...

Neuron Mathematical Model Representation of Neural Tensor Network for RDF Knowledge Base Completion

In this paper, a state-of-the-art neuron mathematical model of neural tensor network (NTN) is proposed to RDF knowledge base completion problem. One of the difficulties with the parameter of the network is that representation of its neuron mathematical model is not possible. For this reason, a new representation of this network is suggested that solves this difficulty. In the representation, th...

On the implications of aerosol liquid water and phase separation for organic aerosol mass

Organic compounds and liquid water are major aerosol constituents in the southeast United States (SE US). Water associated with inorganic constituents (inorganic water) can contribute to the partitioning medium for organic aerosol when relative humidities or organic matter to organic carbon (OM /OC) ratios are high such that separation relative humidities (SRH) are below the ambient relative hu...
